Steel gratings – also known as bar gratings – are widely used as walkways, stairs, and landings in everything from theaters and schools to factories, oil rigs, and emergency exits. They are robust, drain well, and are durable, but they have a clear disadvantage: when wet, they can quickly become slippery and dangerous.
Moisture, rain, condensation, or simply wet shoes can turn steel gratings into potential fall hazards. Since this type of surface is often used on emergency stairs and escape routes, it can be risky to traverse – especially with slippery soles or high heels. Minor accidents can quickly become serious if footing fails.
